The commemorative coin celebrates the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, played 13–29 May 2022 in Tampere and Helsinki. Finland hosted the men’s Ice Hockey World Championship for the ninth time. The design on the reverse side of the commemorative coin depicts an ice hockey match: it features an ice rink, players and a stand full of cheering spectators. The edge of the coin is encircled by the words SUOMI FINLAND, the nominal value of the coin, 5 euros and the mint mark of the Royal Dutch Mint. The obverse side portrays five hockey sticks and a puck. The edges include the abbreviations MM and VM (World Championship in Finnish and Swedish), the year 2022 and the letter ”M”, the initial of the artist. The commemorative coin in honor of the games was released on 13 May 2022, the opening day of the tournament.
