35 years of the Erasmus programme
The second 2 euro special coin in 2022 is jointly issued by all euro countries. The coin honors the 35th anniversary of Erasmus programme. Erasmus is the EU's education, youth and sports funding program that supports cooperation in these fields in Europe. The program offers people of all ages opportunities for studying or training abroad. Millions of Europeans have participated in the program since its inception in 1987. The design of the coin is a mix of two major elements of the Erasmus programme: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of its influence over Europe. The first one is symbolised by one of the most known depiction of Erasmus. The second one is symbolised by a beam of links going across the coin from a beacon to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between the European students. As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between the countries. The figure 35, for 35th anniversary comes out from the stars in a contemporary graphical style. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag. Previously Four commemorative coins have been issued jointly: 1. in March 2007, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, 2. in January 2009, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, 3. in January 2012, to commemorate ten years of euro banknotes and coins, 4. and, in August 2015, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the EU flag.
